Hyperintensionality and Ontological Categories

چکیده
Abstract In this paper, I discuss how to distinguish between ontological categories and ordinary categories. Using an argument against van Inwagen’s proposed account of what makes a category as springboard, argue that if are modally robust, then need be understood hyperintensionally. This conclusion opens up wide range new ways define ‘ontological category’, close by briefly outlining one such way in order illustrate the advantages embracing hyperintensionality debate.

Acquiring ontological categories through interaction
We present an experimental framework for the study of a computational agent’s acquisition of ontological categories through interaction with a human agent. This interaction takes the form of joint attention in a shared visual environment. Through a game of guessing words, the computational agent adapts its categorization system a CALM-based neural architecture with a set of Gabor filters and de...
متن کاملGeographic Categories: An Ontological Investigation
This paper reports the results of a series of experiments designed to establish how non-expert subjects conceptualize geospatial phenomena. Subjects were asked to give examples of geographic categories in response to a series of differently phrased elicitations. The results yield an ontology of geographic categories—a catalogue of the prime geospatial concepts and categories shared in common by...

متن کاملBARBARA HELLER and HEINRICH HERRE ONTOLOGICAL CATEGORIES IN GOL
General Ontological Language (GOL) is a formal framework for representing and building ontologies. The purpose of GOL is to provide a system of top-level ontologies which can be used as a basis for building domain-specific ontologies. The present paper gives an overview about the basic categories of the GOL-ontology. GOL is part of the work of the research group Ontologies in Medicine (Onto-Med...
متن کاملThe Acquisition of Ontological Categories: the Mass Nouns Issue
This paper explores the properties of mass and count nouns in child language. Results from experimental research with English speaking children are compared with an analysis of the spontaneous speech production of Italian-speaking children. It is argued that children exposed to Italian and English as young as two know that the target grammar distinguishes between count and mass nouns. Their kno...
